When the first art college was established in 1925, original forms of modern paintings developed in Vietnam that re-applied skills used in traditional lacquer and silk paintings. Modern and elaborate paintings were made in Hanoi - once called "Little Paris" (Petit Paris). "Propaganda paintings" of the war time encouraging people to fight against the "giant enemy" were often full of artistry and popular charm. This is the first exhibition in Japan that introduces half a century of modern Vietnamese paintings showcasing 90 pieces of silk and lacquer paintings as well as oil paintings and woodblock prints.
