Application Guidelines
Artists and Researchers in Residence Program 2008
Aim of the Residence Program

FAAM invites Asian artists, researchers and curators for an extended period of time in order to present various interactive programs. The program aims at deepening an understanding and interest in Asian art among the people of Fukuoka, enriching the local culture as well as FAAM becoming a major centre for exchanging ideas and aesthetics through art.

Artist in Residence Program
(four artists are invited for three months each year)

Asian artists are invited to engage in making artworks, workshops and exhibitions.

Researchers/ Curators in Residence Program
(two people are invited for three months each year)

Researchers and curators of Asian modern and contemporary art are invited to research and investigate on the field of their interest. FAAM supports their research activities and organizes lectures for them.

■Artists
■Meera George [India]
Born in 1979 in Chennai, India. Studied at the University of Delhi, India and Kent Institute of Art and Design, UK.
9 June to 19 August
Meera will create an installation that re-imagines the exhibition space as a room. Furniture, books, household objects and other items will be covered with traditional Indian saris. She will also hold a talk on the traditions, designs and wrapping styles of saris, and has scheduled a workshop in Alpana (Indian floor art) for high school students.
■Don M. Salubayba [Philippines]
Born in 1978 in Davao, Philippines. Studied art at the University of the Philippines.
9 June to 19 August
Well-known characters from folk tales and fables will be recreated in puppets, and Don will film a silhouette animation using the works, and use them to make a silhouette installation. Visitors' shadows will add to those of the figures' shadows, creating more dialogue again.
■Hsia Aihua [Taiwan]
Born in 1973 in Taipei, Taiwan. Studied art at the National Taiwan College of the Arts and Okinawa Prefectural University of Arts, Japan.
23 January to 25 March 2009
Aihua's wall painting will be created with a group of volunteer helper by carving images into a wooden board using a sculptor's knife, then applying lacquer and gold leaf to the grooves. The artist will make a motif of various sights and feelings she experiences in Fukuoka. A workshop will also be held to make lacquer postcards on postcard-sixed tin wood.
■Wei Leng Tay [Singapore]
Born in 1978, Singapore. Works as a freelance photographer.
13 January to 25 March 2009
In her series of portraits taken of Fukuoka residents, Wei Leng will take one shot of each subject at FAAM and another at the person's home. The Photographs will form a series depicting various perceptions of reality. She will also hold a workshop in which participants tell stories using photographs.

■Alongkorn Chansuk [Thailand]
Born in 1977 in Bangkok, Thailand. Studied art history at Silpakorn University and is currently a curator at the National Gallery, Bangkok.
15 October to 25 November
Alongkorn will study the spread of Pop art and contemporary culture in Japan, comparing this with similar development in Thailand and elsewhere in Asia. In her public lectures, Alongkorn will discuss the course taken by Thai paintings through the ages, from the early Ayutthaya period to the present.
■May Lyn L.Cruz [Philippines]
Born in 1977 in Philippines. Studied art history at Univeristy of Philippines and is currently exhibition & education programs manager in Metropolitan Museum of Manila.
16 February to 29 March 2009
May Lyn will research on artworks by Filipino artist Brenda Fajardo in the FAAM collection and compare these with works of a counterpart Japanese contemporary artist who also engages in narrative paintings. In her public lecture, she will talk on the exhibition "Musubitsuki: Japanese Images / Thematics in Philippine Art" that was held in Metropolitan Museum of Manila.
